a visit with: Tanvi Asher-Jones of Peppermint

Over the next few months leading up to our November market, Tuesday through Thursday we'll be showcasing one of our 2012 market artists, their work, and a little peek at where they make the magic happen. We hope you'll enjoy this new series, where we'll ask the same questions of each of our makers.

You'll get to know a little bit about our talented makers and what inspires them, read about their favorite ways to recharge their creativity, and learn what experience has shown them to be an invaluable piece of the puzzle in selling their work. Come November, won't it be great to walk into a room filled with inspiring, familiar faces? We think so, too!

We're delighted to kick off this week's visits by spending some time with talented designer, and first time Second Storie vendor, Tanvi Asher-Jones...

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
It all began with my MFA thesis. My thesis was called Transformations: Explorations in body shelter. I was manipulating different clothing patterns so that they would function in many different ways. After I graduated, I never stopped creating clothing using those crazy patterns I had created during the MFA. It was a source of stress relief. I also learned the power of on-demand printing on fabric which was a huge "WHOA" moment for me.I began creating a piece every week and before I knew it - I had a collection. Once I lost my "day" job, I knew it was a sign that I had to take my passion further. The rest, as they say, is history.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Being creative is NOT easy. There will be a lot of set backs and a lot of naysayers but don't let complexities stop you. Talk to people you look up to, ask for help if you need it - you'll be surprised how many people are gracious. And most of all, put 101% into it.

My parents are my biggest source on inspiration,

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
I spent a few years making elaborate dioramas and stage sets -
interested in the creation of an atmosphere. This has translated itself into my desire to create little installations with the presentation of my work, where everything feels like it comes from the same place, where every object has a life.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Be careful not to get too attached to either a piece or a method of working. I have found that when I allow something to become too precious, it can stifle me from doing better.

Three things or people who inspire you?
Both have achieved perfection in their created little worlds.
Also, my grandparents. They are remarkable stewards of their things and they have cultivated so much talent - woodworking, gardening, knitting, you name it - much of which they taught themselves and they always do things the right way.

Favorite way to take a break/recharge your creative batteries?
I love being with my family, especially outdoors. My two children remind me to simplify my life. We feed a lot of ducks.

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
My very talented mother, grandmother and aunt were all involved in craft shows when I was young. I must have caught the bug
early on.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Love what you make and others will be able to tell.

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
My tile work is inspired directly from the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works historic tiles. I worked there from 2002-2005 as a tile maker and the style and timeless content is still an influence.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Work to present your work in the right way, have a variety of price points, and have all of the paperwork to go with it- email lists, handouts, and business cards. Customer service is really important too- returning customers are the best because you know they are really happy with your product and most likely will tell their friends and family about you too!

Three artists I admire and am constantly inspired by are:
Rebecca Chappell, Annabeth Rosen, Ruth Duckworth

Favorite way to take a break/recharge your creative batteries?
I love to go to museums or the NK (art) section in the library. By looking at old and ancient objects I feel entirely humbled
and motivated to make things with a richness and hopefully
timeless quality.

Any news or upcoming events you'd like to share?
I will have an open studio sale October 6th & 7th, as part of the Naples Open Studio Trail. Free and all welcome!

Cuisine Culture (a pottery + food event) has an upcoming event: Bountiful Bowls, on November 2nd. Tickets go on sale soon. Admission includes a delicious local dinner and handmade bowl. This event is a collaboration between Cuisine Culture
(Kala Stein & Kate Money) and the Rabbit Room.
