a visit with: Sara Silvio

Over the next few months leading up to our November market, Tuesday through Thursday we'll be showcasing one of our 2012 market artists, their work, and a little peek at where they make the magic happen. We hope you'll enjoy this new series, where we'll ask the same questions of each of our makers.

You'll get to know a little bit about our talented makers and what inspires them, read about their favorite ways to recharge their creativity, and learn what experience has shown them to be an invaluable piece of the puzzle in selling their work. Come November, won't it be great to walk into a room filled with inspiring, familiar faces? We think so, too!

We're a day late in beginning our posts this week - we'll double up tomorrow!  But today we're happy to begin by visiting with jewelry designer and returning Second Storie vendor, Sara Silvio...

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
It's my fascination with the relationship between adornment and how we present ourselves to the world...I'm almost certain that's why I do what I do.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
At your very beginning my advice is to go into yourself to be original as you carve your path...really trust your internal works for all it has to offer your creativity and success.

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
For years my attention would fluctuate between an obsession with paper and an obsession with fabric & sewing. By embroidering directly onto paper, I am able to combine both of my passions.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Trust your instincts and just do it! You simply have to take the chance and start. The rest will figure itself out.

Nature. Ephemera. Details.
I love tiny, forgotten things.

Nature. Getting outside to hike or walk in the woods works every time.

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
A course in organic chemistry piqued my interest in soap making. A random weekend adventure to the Vermont Sheep and Wool Festival resulted in fascination with all things fiber and I haven't been able to stop since.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Listen to your friends and family when they compliment your work and encourage you. Chances are, if you listen to them and show other people your work, those people will love it just as much as those closest to you.

Three things or people who inspire you?
My parents inspired me from the very beginning and gave me the practical skills I needed to be a maker of things.

Being around other creative people is incredible the amazing members of my spinning guild, the Genesee Valley Handspinners Guild. A little creative energy, learning new techniques, and comparing notes always makes me want to break out my dye pots and spin up a new yarn.

Favorite way to take a break/recharge your creative batteries?
Gathering up the furry creatures in my house for an outside adventure makes for a great break, both because we all get outside, and because herding bunnies is an exhilarating and futile activity.

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
About three years ago, while working towards my degree in Industrial Design/Furniture Design, I began saving my small "unusable" scraps of wood. One day, in an effort to put my growing box of scrap material to use, I began to saw, carve, and drill on a small scale for the first time, and I fell in love.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
In short, make something that you love, believe in, and can relate to; the passion and enthusiasm you put into your work will be evident to your audience.

- her studio -

Three things or people who inspire you?
My first inspiration is and probably always will be my material of choice - wood, as it naturally informs the different directions that I take my jewelry. A close second are my parents, as they are my biggest support system, and their gift of helping me build my own wood shop and studio has made The Knotty Owl possible. Lastly, geometric shapes and cultural patterns and symbols have a large impact on the aesthetic of my work.

- her work -

Favorite way to take a break/recharge your creative batteries?
My favorite way to break from The Knotty Owl is to play and experiment with another medium. Painting, sewing, and embroidering are three of my favorites, and I find that they naturally influence my new ideas that I take back to the wood shop with me when I return to jewelry making. I can't seem to ever pull myself away from some form of making, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Come November, won't it be great to walk into a room filled with inspiring, familiar faces? We think so, too!

We're happy to wrap up the week by spending some time with one of our very own, talented letterpress designer and printer, Rachael Hetzel of Pistachio Press...

a visit with:

- Rachael Hetzel -

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
I got my BFA and MFA in printmaking and was fascinated by letterpress printing. I drove to Ohio and bought my first press and started to learn the process. It was a way for me to bridge printing with my increasing interest in craft.  I started with a small card line and making invitations for friends and then it snowballed from there.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Just jump in. Stop thinking about everything that might hold you back and go for it. All of the lists and plans that you're making might be keeping you from actually making the work - don't use them as an excuse to start. Don't be afraid of failure. You'll learn the most that way even though it's scary. And make friends with people who are also makers. They'll push you when you need it, they understand what you're going through, and they can give you advice that really resonates.

- her studio -

Three things or people who inspire you?
1. Patterns and repetition.
2. The letterpress community. It's surprisingly strong, supportive and non-competitive.
3. My friends.

- her work -

Favorite way to take a break/recharge your creative batteries?
1. Yoga. It gives me a way to let go of the day and rest my mind. I always feel refreshed and energized afterwards.
2. Hanging out with my dogs and husband, particularly when we lounge around the house, make popcorn and watch a movie.

What first inspired you to create/make what you do now?
I have always loved drawing. In 2005 I discovered how much fun it was to draw on 3D surfaces. There are so many challenges, problems, and possibilities that I've never looked back.

Your advice for someone just starting out
and wanting to sell their work?
Treat your studio time like a job. It's too easy to come late and leave early when you are your own boss.
